An interesting way to sell out an opera
Date: 2/8/2011 By Rosebrook Classical

"There are always two ways of looking at things. A good example of this is the news from the BBC that Opera North's production of Bizet's Carmen, is getting the UK equivalent of a PG-13 rating due to "bare breasts and buttocks". One one hand, you can look at it sort of as self-censorship, and people could be riled up about it. On the other, it's a surefire way to sell out an opera-house, and bring a younger crowd. And it seems that the opera company knows what it's doing here, stating "We have taken the view that adding a simple 12+ age guidance is merely helping our audiences by providing more information about the production."

Perhaps it's a cultural difference, but in the U.S. I read that as saying, we wanted to get some attention, and give people who might not go to the opera a reason to come to this one."

Speaking of ways to get younger demographics interested in opera, we have to give a shoutout to our local opera company, Fort Worth Opera, for putting on another "Opera Shots" program Thursday (Feb 10) at The Usual in Fort Worth. To read more about the "Opera Shots" program, check out our posts from the fall (click here & here).
