Fort Worth Opera's 'Three Decembers' well-acted, designed

Jake Heggie's Three Decembers is close enough to soap opera to present some challenges to a producing company, but the Fort Worth Opera's effective new production meets those challenges well. Sunday afternoon's opening performance in Scott Theatre at the Fort Worth Community Arts Center was a moving experience.
The chamber opera, known originally as Last Acts, was premiered four years ago by the Houston Grand Opera. The revised version includes one major new number and some transitional orchestral material, transforming a two-acter into a one-act drama of about an hour-and-a-half.
I found the new version more appealing than the old. Maybe growing familiarity contributed to that, but the quality of the new musical material certainly played a role. The new aria is lovely; the orchestral writing is atmospheric (that was a strong point in the original).
