"A blazing performance by Carter Scott!" – Opera News
ACT I: The Church of Sant'Andrea della Valle, Rome, 1800 Mario Cavaradossi is working on a painting when an escaped political prisoner, Angelotti, finds him in the church. Cavaradossi swears to help Angelotti evade Baron Scarpia, the Roman chief of police. Floria Tosca, Cavaradossi’s lover, does not know of the plot, and when she arrives at the church looking for Cavaradossi, Scarpia uses her jealous nature to trick her into helping him find Angelotti. Seeing Tosca’s passion only deepens Scarpia’s desire to possess her.
ACT II: Scarpia’s Rooms at the Palazzo Farnese Scarpia’s men bring Cavaradossi in to be interrogated. Cavaradossi is tortured when he refuses to answer, and Tosca, unable to bear it, tells Scarpia where to find Angelotti. Scarpia orders his men to put the painter to death but tells Tosca that he will arrange a mock execution for Cavaradossi instead if she will give herself to him. Tosca agrees and asks for freedom for both she and Cavaradossi. He agrees, but before Scarpia can claim her, she murders him.
ACT III: The Ramparts of Castel Sant’Angelo As dawn breaks, Tosca goes to where Cavaradossi awaits his execution. She explains how she saved his life and secured their release before stabbing Scarpia. Cavaradossi is amazed at Tosca’s strength and listens to her explain how he must act in order to make his execution look real. After the firing squad is done, Tosca realizes that Scarpia double-crossed her and her lover is in fact dead. Vowing justice before God, she leaps to her death just as Scarpia’s body is found.
