CD: Johann Adolf Hasse: Marc Antonio e Cleopatra with Ava Pine.

On Tuesday August 31, a double CD set by Ars Lyrica was released.  It is the world première recording of Johann Adolf Hasse's Marc Antonio e Cleopatra, a serenata written in 1725 during the composer's youthful studies in Italy. Telling the familiar tale of Antony and Cleopatra's brief but ecstatic love affair, Hasse's score makes vivid the complex emotions of the title characters in some spectacularly beautiful music. This is a must-have recording, with two of the brightest young American opera stars: mezzo-soprano Jamie Barton as Marc Antonio and soprano Ava Pine as Cleopatra. 

 This recording will prepare you for what's to come with Ava Pine as Cleopatra during the 2011 Fort Worth Opera Festival production Julius Caesar. 

Ava Pine provided the following background:  "Hasse was a contemporary of Handel (and was married to the OTHER diva in the "dueling diva" set - not Francesca Cuzzoni, but Faustina Bordoni).  This is his setting of the story of the end of Cleopatra's life - premiered in 1725, the year after Handel's Julius Caesar.  The role of Cleopatra (which I sing in the recording) was originally performed by Farinelli!"
