Dead Man Walking by Jake Heggie

Dead Man Walking was the first opera composed by Jake Heggie. It is based on a book by Sister Helen Prejean and her real-life experiences working with death-row inmates. The libretto was written by Pulitzer-Prize winner Terrence McNally. The opera was first performed in San Francisco in 2000.

story | Based on actual events. In Louisiana in the 1980s, Joseph De Rocher is a convicted murderer awaiting execution on death row. De Rocher begins a correspondence with Sister Helen. After meeting with him, and despite misgivings of her own, Sister Helen takes on a personal mission to convince De Rocher to find peace and salvation through confession.
