Approaching her with an offer of assistance, Don Giovanni intends to seduce her as well, until he recognizes her as a past conquest. Donna Elvira has tracked him throughout Spain seeking revenge for abandoning her. Quickly he eludes her, leaving Leporello to handle the situation. The servant tries to comfort her by telling her she is not the only victim, and he gives her the tally of all the women his master has seduced. As Don Giovanni re-appears, villagers enter celebrating the engagement of the young and beautiful Zerlina to Masetto. Smitten with Zerlina, Don Giovanni invites everyone to his castle, instructing Leporello to remove Masetto, leaving Zerlina alone with the Don. He promises to marry her, proclaiming she is too good for the peasant Masetto. Half convinced to give in to his magnetic charm, Zerlina is dragged away by Donna Elvira, who tries to tell Zerlina the truth about the rogue. Donna Anna, now in mourning, and Don Ottavio enter to find Don Giovanni, but they do not suspect he is the Commendatore’s murderer. They ask for his assistance to find the assassin. Donna Elvira tries to tell the others Don Giovanni is nothing but a seducer and betrayer, but he claims that Donna Elvira is mad and leads her away while promising Donna Anna his help. Donna Anna recognizes the Don’s voice as that of her attacker. Distraught, she tells Don Ottavio of the attempted rape. Outside of Don Giovanni’s palace, Masetto accuses Zerlina of betraying him. Zerlina protests her innocence, pacifying his jealousy momentarily. They hear the Don approaching, and Zerlina wants Masetto to run, arousing his suspicions again. Masetto hides to see how Zerlina reacts to Don Giovanni. Zerlina also hides, but the Don finds her and tries to lead her into the bushes – the bushes where Masetto is hiding. Don Giovanni recovers quickly after discovering the young man, and escorts the couple into his castle for the party. Donna Elvira, Donna Anna and Don Ottavio arrive at the ball masked, intending to expose Don Giovanni to everyone. Leporello draws Masetto into the dance while the Don maneuvers Zerlina into another room. When a scream erupts, Don Giovanni emerges to blame Leporello for the attack, but the three masked figures remove their disguises and confront the Don as the culprit. He escapes again, barely. Act II: Outside Donna Elvira’s home, a reluctant Leporello trades cloaks with Don Giovanni, who now has his eye set on the lady’s maid. Donna Elvira appears on the balcony to confess that despite his treatment of her, she cannot hate Don Giovanni and hopes he will reform. The Don tells his servant to take his place, woo her and take her away. Meanwhile, Don Giovanni’s romantic plans are interrupted by Masetto and a band of peasants who are looking for him. Disguised as Leporello, the Don points them in the wrong direction, and left alone with an unsuspecting Masetto gives him a sound beating. Zerlina arrives in time to console her fiancé. Still dressed as the Don, Leporello tries to escape the courtyard where he has brought Donna Elvira. His flight is cut off by the arrival of Donna Anna, Don Ottavio, Zerlina and Masetto. The quartet, believing him to be Don Giovanni, threaten to kill him while Donna Elvira tries to protect him. Leporello reveals who he really is, and in the confusion flees. Betrayed again, Donna Elvira voices her rage at Don Giovanni. Leporello meets his master in the graveyard. He warns Don Giovanni that he is hunted, but the Don merely tells of his latest adventure with the maid. The conversation is interrupted by a frightening laugh from Commendatore’s statue. Leporello fearfully reads the inscription on the memorial’s base: “Here I await the vengeance on the impious man who killed me.” Acting unshaken, the Don orders his terrified servant to invite the statue to dinner. The statue accepts the invitation. At the castle, Donna Elvira makes a last appeal to Don Giovanni to give up his wicked ways. While he refuses to repent, the statue arrives, as invited. Leporello begs the Don to stay away from it, but the statue demands the rogue take him by the hand and repent. Unmoved, Don Giovanni shakes hands with the statue anyway, which sends him to hell. Donna Anna, Don Ottavio, Zerlina, Masetto, and Donna Elvira enter, and Leporello explains what happened. Her vengeance satisfied, Donna Anna agrees to marry Don Ottavio after one year of mourning. Donna Elvira states that she will retire to a convent. Zerlina and Masetto go home for dinner, and Leporello must find a new master. Starring
