Fort Worth Opera's updated 'Mikado' still satirizes the times

Gilbert & Sullivan's The Mikado is a satirical look at Victorian England disguised as a nutty fairy tale about Japan. It's one of a series of G&S operas that Darren Woods, general director of the Fort Worth Opera, calls collectively "the Saturday Night Live of their day."

While maintaining the Japanese pretense, Woods has brought a very much updated Mikado to Fort Worth. It opened at Bass Hall last weekend and will continue with performances Sunday afternoon, May 27 and June 4.
