Wedding Season Opens in Fort Worth – Marriage of Figaro Review
Date: 5/20/2012 By David Weuste, Everyday Opera

Once again, the Fort Worth Opera excels in performing a laugh-filled run-through of an opera buffa (comic opera). For an opera that prides itself on reaching out to the community and bringing new opera-goers into the fold through programming, it seems that comedies are doing just as good a job of breaking down perceived barriers as the modern and chamber operas. There’s just something about a good laugh that transcends space and time.

With three of the four operas having already been opened, it’s safe to say this has been one of the strongest festivals in the three years I’ve been going. Not only have the operas been great, the casts have been stellar — from the major roles to the minor ones, there haven’t been many weak-links. And even beyond the singing, all three of the set designs have been an added feature of excitement this season. With the glamorous, towering scenes in Tosca, the modern, slick, moving parts in Three Decembers, and now the lovely, (generally) minimalist sets of Saturday night’s The Marriage of Figaro, “eye candy” has been abound this season.
