An Opera by Philip Glass

Based on the Scenario by Jean Cocteau

Film: La Belle et La Bête (Beauty and the Beast) by Jean Cocteau

1946 French surrealist romantic fantasy film starring Josette Day as Belle and Jean Marais as the Beast

American composer Philip Glass’s La Belle et la Bête (Beauty and the Beast) is a bold fusion of opera and film — a genre-defying concert augmentation of Jean Cocteau’s 1946 cinematic masterpiece. In this mesmeric production, Fort Worth Opera singers and musicians perform Glass’s hypnotic score live on stage, perfectly synchronized to the surrealist fairy tale projected behind them on the big screen at the historic Ridglea Theater. With expressive singers and a unique musical ensemble replacing the film’s original dialogue and soundtrack, the experience blurs the line between cinema and stage — delivering a visually stunning, musically intricate, and utterly one-of-a-kind experience.
